Chapter 10

I landed on the soft earth, the gutter landing on top of me with a loud clang.

The metal slapped against my face and arm, but I barely felt the pain as I attempted to catch my breath. My lungs burned and terror flowed through me at not being able to breathe, as I’d had the air out knocked of me when I landed.

Zoey slid next to me. “Genesis! Talk to me! Are you okay?”

As I attempted to breathe normally, I moved my toes, fingers, and then neck. I was so thankful everything worked and I wasn’t seriously hurt. My fingers and hands throbbed like a bitch, but I’d deal with that later.

“What are you doing here and why in the hell was Genesis on my roof?” Kieran barked. He kneeled and placed his hands on my head to search my scalp. For what, I wasn’t sure.

“It’s all my fault,” Zoey said. “I talked her into spying on you, but she fought me. She thought getting on the roof was the safest place to be. But if you ask me, she was hiding more than spying.”

He held my head still. “Just stay calm and don’t move.” He glared at Zoey. “What were you thinking? You could’ve both been killed. What if somebody had shot you two and asked questions later? I’m going to call for medical help, because apparently I’m the only one who cares.”

“I don’t need help. I’m not hurt,” I protested and tried to stand up. They each put a hand on a shoulder to stop me. “Seriously, I’m okay.”

“I do care about her, so don’t tell me how I feel.” Zoey rolled her eyes. “And the guns? Really? This is a nice area. I doubt people would just shoot us. They’d call the police first.”

“So you’re an expert on my neighborhood now? Please. I never would’ve forgiven you if Genesis had been seriously hurt. Hell, she’s lucky she doesn’t have a broken back or neck.”

“She’s fine!”

“Uh, guys. I’m right here,” I said, attempting to stand again when the sound of sirens echoed in the distance. “I’m good. See?” I wiggled my hands and legs to show them.

Kieran scooped me in to his arms and lifted me without effort. “Zoey, just go home. I’ll let her rest before I drive her home. If she shows signs of a concussion, I’ll bring her to the hospital myself.”

“I’m not leaving you alone with her.” She scoffed.

His eyes narrowed. “And why not?”

“I’d never forgive myself if she dies.”

His voice turned to venomous as his eyes narrowed. “I don’t know you that well, but you don’t strike me as someone who believes everything the media says.”

She ignored him and looked at me. “Sega, I’m not leaving you alone with him.”

Closing my eyes in frustration, I let my head fall against Kieran’s chest. “I love you, Zo, but I’ll be all right. I’ll text once I’m home, okay?”

Her nostrils flared and she turned on her heels. She stomped through the yard and flung herself over the fence.
